Theme from Howl’s Moving Castle | Joe Hisaishi

Howl’s Moving Castle

It was in 2010 when my friend introduced me to this. Back then, my knowledge of Studio Ghibli was only restricted to Spirited Away and The Cat Returns *gasps*. I remembered my first impression of this soundtrack — magical.

Hisashi introduced the piece with broken chords for his piano solo, before the forlorn oboe interrupts, and the string section cued a three-beat tempo for a dainty waltz. It was pure bliss listening to it. And I love the title of the opening theme! 人生のメリーゴーランド, translating to “The Merry-go-round of Life”.
The main theme was exchanged between the piano and woodwinds before the brasses took over with a bright fanfare, while the lower string section continued with the waltz tempo. The shrill piccolo and glockenspiel echoed with twinkling notes before the timpani rumbles brought back the melody. The spotlight was finally given to the string section as the brasses took over the rhythm. The light waltz developed into a majestic one that reminded me of those grand Viennese waltzes — cymbal clashes, snare drum and timpani rolls while the whole orchestra returned in full force. This was one of my favourite part in the movie, Stroll Through the Sky, where the charming Howl brought Sophie up in the sky after rescuing her. I would have went starry-eyed if I were her! *v*
With the violins descending the scales quickly after the grandeur, giving a sweet closure, I’ve officially falling in love with the wonders of Hisaishi’s works then.
Listen also to the piano and strings version, a lighter rendition in contrast to this colourful orchestra version!
Sorry, I’ve had enough of running away, Sophie. Now I’ve got something I want to protect. It’s you. ~Howl
